| Training and Support for Those Who Help Others |
 |
|
| Volunteers are the backbone of PBSO, and their dedication
to the organization is critical for it to function on a day-to-day
basis. Fully trained Volunteers provide almost all direct client services.
So that Volunteers feel good about their experience with PBSO, the
organization provides the necessary training and personal support
they need to do their job effectively. Basic Training, Continuing
Education and continuous support helps ensure the Volunteers
educational and emotional needs are met. |
 |
| Basic Volunteer Training |
 |
|
| All Volunteers who are interested in being a 1-to1
Support Volunteer or a Support Group Facilitator receive Basic Volunteer
Training before they have any contact with bereaved parents. The training
includes basic information on grief theory, effective listening techniques
and the principals of self-help. This training is available on-line. |
 |
| Continuing Education |
 |
|
| To ensure the quality of support remains high, all
Direct Client Service Volunteers (CSV) are expected to attend Continuing
Education training seminars two times each year. Here, new information
can be distributed, and the needs of the Volunteers can be discussed. |
 |
| Volunteer Support |
 |
|
| Volunteers who work directly with bereaved parents
have an important and often emotionally draining role. To make sure
they have the training and support they need to continue providing
quality support services, PBSO staff members contact them regularly.
The PBSO Group Facilitator Manager contacts Support Group Facilitators
to discuss issues before and after group meetings. The Volunteer Coordinator
provides support to 1-to-1 Support Volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged
to contact PBSO staff members at any time, should they have a concern.
